I became intrigued by freezer paper stencils I saw on flickr.  I started doing a little research and I took bits and pieces from a bunch of different sites I visited.  Here’s how I do my stenciling.

Materials needed:
cutting mat
x-acto knife (or small scissors)
freezer paper
pencil
fabric paint
paint brush
iron
hair dryer (optional)
onesie, t-shirt, or whatever you are planning to stencil on

Step 1:
Draw or trace your stencil onto a piece of freezer paper (wax side of paper down).

Step 2:
Cut out your stencil carefully with an x-acto knife or scissors.  Try to do it as smoothly as possible.

Step 3:
Cut out another solid square of freezer paper roughly the same size as your stencil.  This is going to go on the opposite side of where you are painting so the paint does not seep through the fabric onto the back of your t-shirt or onesie.

Step 5:
Put the blank square of freezer paper inside your shirt or onesie (wax side up).  Then put your stencil on your shirt (was side down).  Press with an iron (medium heat setting) until the freezer paper is ironed onto your shirt (approx 10-20 seconds depending on the heat of your iron).  Be careful not to burn the fabric. 

Step 6:
Get your paint ready.  I didn’t have brown paint so I mixed some red and green paint to make this chocolate brown color.

Step 7:
Start dabbing on your paint.  Be careful to stay on the stencil.  I ruined a onesie because my paint brush went a little too far over the edge!

Step 8:
Wait 12-24 hours for your paint to dry before peeling the freezer paper off.  Or, if you’re impatient like me, plug in your hairdryer and dry it.  Don’t hold the hairdryer too close.

Step 9:
When the paint is dry, peel off the freezer paper and heat set with your iron or dryer (I recommend heat setting according to the instructions on the paint you used).  Turn the shirt inside out first and press with your iron for 30 seconds (be careful not to burn your shirt).  Then do the same on the other side of your shirt.

Step 10:
Admire your creation!!
